There are many Snorkeling excursions departing daily from Key West. Keep scrolling to see all the options, but first we'd like to share with you the TOP 5 Best Snorkeling excursions in Key West!
This trip departs at 10am and includes complimentary snacks, lunch, beer, and wine.
Why is this our number one choice for a snorkeling excursion in Key West? – This trip takes its guests aboard a large sailboat which is specially designed to sail in shallow waters, which makes it a perfect vessel for sailing into the remote hard-to-navigate waters of the “back country.” With nothing but wind to power the boat, guests will experience what it was like to travel through these waters as the first Europeans did when they discovered the New World. Experienced captains know the best “secret” patch reefs and hidden channels cutting through the mangrove islands. Extremely knowledgeable crew will teach guests about the history and ecology of the area throughout the trip. The service is impeccable and fun. This long, 6.5-hour adventure allows just enough time to reach some of the most remote parts of our backcountry, swimming holes, sandbars, and mangrove islands. This trip is very relaxing in between and during all activities. Guides are in the water pointing out hidden sea creatures, and they make the guided kayak tour extremely interesting, often spotting sharks, sea turtles, sting rays, jellyfish as well as teaching guests about the mangrove islands and all the beautiful birds that call the mangroves home. This is THE best way to experience Key West like a local!
This trip departs at 10am and includes complimentary continental breakfast, lunch buffet, beer, wine, sangria, and mimosas.
Why do we recommend this trip? - It’s just a perfect day on the water. There are no scheduled activities, but snorkel gear and kayaks are provided as well as numerous floatation devices. Guests board a catamaran Sailboat and enjoy a continental breakfast on the way out to the anchor location. Once anchored up, guests are allowed to enjoy their time however they like; relaxing, floating, lounging, kayaking, snorkeling, drinking and more. A lunch buffet is also provided once the destination is reached. The one downside for snorkeling is that guests probably won’t experience a premium snorkel destination, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some beautiful things to see. The tradeoff is that everyone gets to move at their own pace and experience the back country like a local might, with the added bonus of a great food spread and plenty of space aboard to lounge in comfort.
This trip leaves at 5:30 and it includes complimentary beer, wine, rum punch, and soda.
Why is this our first choice for a “3 hour” snorkel sail? What's not to enjoy about a Snorkel trip that also includes Rum, Reggae music, and sunset on the water. Its a short trip, but it checks all the boxes.
This trip departs at 9:30am until 2pm and includes beer, wine, and snacks.
Why the morning ½ day? – 2 hours shorter than our number one choice, this trip still packs a lot into a half day adventure. Kayaking through Mangrove Islands, Snorkeling beautiful Coral heads, and offer unlimited beer and wine along with snacks.
This trip departs at 3:30am until 8pm (summer hours) and includes beer, wine, and snacks.
Why the afternoon ½ day? – For all the same reasons as booking their Premium trip which we listed as #1 snorkeling tour in key West. The only downside is that the shorter trip doesn’t allow the crew to take you quite as far into the backcountry. This trip, however, is perfect for families with children. A little quicker paced with more action to keep the kids entertained, and still all the great knowledgeable guides who keep things interesting and fun. Also, if time is a factor, this trip gives you the option to have half the day available for whatever other Key-West-bucket-list items you are trying to accomplish.
This trip departs at 11am OR 3:30 PM and includes complimentary beer and soda.
Why this snorkel trip? Because why not add some dolphin watching to your snorkel trip! Anything you can do to add more bang to your time commitment! This might be the best beginner, or kid friendly snorkeling trip. For anyone who doesn’t want to spend too much time being in the water, dolphin watching is a nice combo to add to your time on a snorkel boat. Keep in mind that the time allotted for snorkeling is going to be pretty brief.
Create your own custom snorkeling trip which can include other excursions as well, such as dolphin watching, kayaking, sandbar etc.

Home to the world’s 3rd largest barrier reef, Key West can offer some amazing snorkeling or diving opportunities, but here’s a few things you might want to consider or know before you book your snorkeling excursions.
1. Set your expectations! There are many weather/water related conditions that can decrease visibility in the water. Especially during the winter months, visibility at the reef can be low, and leave people disappointed with their experience. For this reason, our number 1 recommendation for your snorkeling adventure is an Eco-Tour. These teams are constantly monitoring weather conditions and finding the best locations to snorkel given the current weather/water conditions. However, you’ll be signing up for more than just snorkeling. When visibility is exceptional at the reef, views can be amazing. with lots of sea life, corral structures and caves/ledges etc. (exceptional visibility isn’t common)
2. The reef varies in depth from less than a foot to over 30 feet deep. Keep in mind that all the public snorkel trips are geared towards beginners, so you will most likely find yourself near a shallow area of reef, but the depth can change over a short amount of distance. If you are an experienced snorkeler or a natural beginner, ask your crew where the best spots are to test out your abilities. Guides and crew in Key West are very knowledgeable!!
3. When the visibility is low, there are still places to go! The Key West backcountry is an extremely shallow area of ocean that represents the separation of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The Back Country consists of low-lying Mangrove Islands and shallow sandbars. These features often protect the visibility, and they are home to some beautiful patch reefs and Sponge Gardens. Due to the shallow waters, it is highly recommended that you have a guide or tour company to get you out there and back safely.
4. Please don’t touch the corral! Some types of corrals are poisonous and can cause a good sting! More importantly, as guides, it is our duty to be good stewards of the sea. Not everyone knows that by merely touching a corral, one can kill decades of growth! I’ve seen people standing on corral heads and holding on to them for balance. This is incredibly sad to see, and a lot of people don’t know better. I would be remiss if I didn’t remind people here that the reef is a very delicate ecosystem, and we are slowly losing it. We like to say, “Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but bubbles.”
5. It is not uncommon to see Sea Turtles, Sharks, and Dolphins! However, you are more likely to see these creatures from the boat. We call Sea turtles ``shooting stars of the sea,” because they pop out of the water and by the time someone points and says, “Look at that sea turt…,” it has already taken its breath and is diving back down to a safer depth. So, keep your head on a swivel and look for shadows in the water to best spot turtles. Dolphins are often spotted from the boat while underway and most captains will often try and get you closer, if possible, regardless of what type of tour you are on. Sharks are THRILLING to see. At the reef, you may get lucky and spot a shark! Most common are small reef sharks which are almost never aggressive towards humans in the water. If you are lucky enough to see a larger shark, don’t panic! Consider yourself extremely lucky and enjoy the experience! They will probably move on quickly.
6. Any Snorkel excursion you choose will not serve you alcohol until after snorkeling. This is due to Coast Guard Rules and common sense. Getting people liquored up and putting them face down in the water isn’t the best idea. If you are visibly intoxicated on the boat, you may not be allowed to snorkel… Don’t shoot the messenger.
7. Bring Polarized sunglasses! Polarized glasses are a game changer when it comes to being able to see into the water from the boat. Don’t miss out on spotting those sea creatures!

There are a few types of snorkeling adventures you can choose from in Key West; Reef Snorkel trips, Eco Trips (which include snorkeling, sailing, kayaking with knowledgeable guides), and other snorkel combo trips (which will allow you to partake in other activities before and/or after snorkeling).
Reef snorkeling: There are plenty of options for booking a reef snorkel trip, but in our opinion these trips can be a little rushed and feel a little short (Less than an hour of actual snorkeling). The entire trip is only 3 hrs. long including the travel time to get to the reef. If you have the time, we highly recommend doing an Eco Tour. Eco Tours are a little longer, and they also typically include a guided kayak tour in the back country through the mangrove islands. (More on Eco tours below.)
If time doesn’t allow for a longer trip or if you just want to try snorkeling for the first time, then these trips are a great option, and they all include different versions of complimentary alcohol drinks.
You will find that each of the 3-hour reef snorkel trips are very comparable experiences. The decision comes down to 2 main things. What time do you feel like departing?and What type of complimentary booze you prefer?
Here’s what to expect on your 3-hour Reef snorkeling trip: Check in 30 mins before the scheduled departure (It's common for guests to miss their excursion due to getting lost on the way). Friendly crew will greet you aboard a catamaran, sailboat, or power boat. You will most likely be offered some light snacks and refreshments on the way out toward your snorkel destination. The knowledgeable crew will provide you with all the gear you need for snorkeling while explaining how to use it. Once the boat arrives at the snorkel location, it will be a little chaotic as everyone makes their way into the water. Crew will be supervising, lifeguarding, and providing further instruction to anyone who needs it. If the visibility is great, you are in for a real treat! Expect about 45 mins to explore the reef, before being called back aboard. After snorkeling, the crew will provide guests with beer, wine, and various cocktails to sip on as you make your way back to the marina

A 3-hour trip can feel like not enough time, with only 45 mins of actual snorkeling, and honestly feels to me like I’m just being herded like cattle, onto the boat, into the water, back on the boat and then barely time to enjoy a few quick drinks on the way back. I prefer a more personal trip, and one where I can do a little bit more than just snorkel and then have a drink or two. If your schedule allows, skip the quick snorkel, and treat yourself to an eco-tour! Eco tours generally consist of sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking in one fun trip, also these trips are geared around information and interacting with guests. Knowledgeable guides will teach you about the history of Key West as well as the history and ecology of the unique Backcountry. The guides are also quite exceptional at spotting wildlife, from Sea turtles, sharks, Sting Rays, Dolphins, and all the feathered creatures that roost in the mangrove islands. These trips will leave you with lasting memories, and that’s not just my opinion, but from the mouths of hundreds of guests who have shared with me how special their eco tour was. The crews are service oriented, extremely knowledgeable, and amazing at what they do!
There is one company that stands apart and sets the bar for the highest quality of eco tour in Key West
All other Eco Tours are Copycats. We aren’t saying the others are bad, but Danger has been doing Eco Tours for so long that they really have it figured out. This crew gets more 5 star ratings than anyone else. Some of their captains have been around for decades, passing along all the lesser-known spots to the younger captains. They offer amazing service, and they know just about everything one could know about the area.
