As the story goes , William Curry, a prominent Key West resident, became the first self made millionaire on the island. It was his Aunt Sally who invented the Key Lime Pie in the late 1800's.
Key Lime Pie
The Florida Keys are known for Key Lime Pie, after all, it is the home of the Key Lime! The Key Lime is a much smaller breed of lime that is considered more tart than traditional limes and has some unique aromatic qualities that make it such an important ingredient in an honest Key Lime Pie. But not everyone is making an honest key lime pie. Some recipes will substitute regular limes, or even lime juice! But we are not here to judge. However, beware there is an endlessssssss, controversial debate over who has the best Key Lime Pie, and no matter what side we choose, we are likely to make some enemies in the discussion. Forgive us for being political in our stance.
Going on a mission to find the best Key Lime Pie can be a delightful way to relax and fill the gaps of your busy Key West itinerary, and we invite you to join this noble quest! Please message us and tell us where you found your favorite Key Lime Pie! We are excited to hear your opinion! We may even be willing to post your review.
Here’s a few things to know before you get started on your journey
1. You WILL be forced to choose between graham cracker crust, traditional crust, or some artistic rendering of a pie crust!
2. You Will be forced to choose between meringue topping, homemade whipped cream topping, or a lightly garnished slice!
3. You WILL be forced to choose between a traditional custard texture, an uncooked texture, or some fantastic new chef-inspired texture.
4. You Will be forced to choose between jaw dropping visual works of art served with silver dinnerware and a piece served on a paper plate with a plastic fork.
5. Pace yourself! Don’t succumb to the pressure of trying them all too quickly. It is important to enjoy each piece with a proper appetite, and a neutralized tasting palate.
6. Don’t trust anyone else’s opinion! The debate is far too subjective, and everyone has their own personal preference!
When I First came to Key West, I found a job at a local restaurant. A group came in claiming they would try Key Lime Pie at every restaurant they sit down at. After trying our pie, one of the gentlemen declared with sincere honesty that this was the best piece of Key Lime Pie he had ever tried. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the pie he just consumed was shipped to us frozen from Cisco. That to say, one never knows where they may find their favorite slice of Key Lime Pie!
If your still ready to accept this mission, here are few good places to start your culinary journey:
(In no particular order)
1. Kermit’s! You won’t get too far before you start hearing about Kermit’s. Many restaurants, in fact, serve Kermit’s pies. This may be the best stop for a novice to acquaint themself with some of the more traditional Key Lime Pies. Located right in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf!
2. El Meson De Pepe’s! This beautiful meringue topped visual delight will start your mouth watering at first sight. Located at Mallory Square
3. Blue Heaven! Extra heavy on the meringue, but deliciously tart. By the way don’t miss out on breakfast at this iconic restaurant in Bahama Village!
4. Now this next recommendation may rustle some feathers, but I have heard many a local say the best Key Lime Pie in Key West is in fact Publix Bakery! Don’t shoot the messenger!
5. Be sure to try a chocolate dipped Key Lime Pie from one of many local ice cream shops such as Key West Polar Bear Ice Cream! in Opal Key Marina
6. We don’t want to spoil too much of the fun! So, keep searching! Keep tasting! When you are feeling weak and falling into that sugar coma, stay strong! You will regain your strength and once again be ready to try your next slice of Key Lime Heaven!
